BB# 25: The 5 stages of growth - which one are you?

There are stages you go through when you’re growing a business.

When I think back to my journey in online coaching and product sales it went something like this:

1. Getting started: I was driven by passion, not making any money but learning and leaning into that passion to serve. I sold my first online product (a membership site) back in 2008 and when that first sale came to this day I remember the feeling of elation.

2. Turning passion to profit. The next part is turning some random sales into a business. I did everything myself. Marketing, selling, delivering. But it took me from a random product launch making a few quid to a business doing £270k per year. I used that money to move to the next step.

3. Going from a lifestyle to a performance business: I invested in people and in marketing. And that investment took the business to around £750k in a couple of years and then beyond a million. My role changed to CEO and my skill set was leadership, partnerships and selling in a different way.

4. From performance business to profitable business: All that investment costs money! You can grow but not make much money. In this next phase we grew well over 7 figures and started to make a lot of profit. That’s where the real value is and why I was able to sell the business for great money.

5. From business owner to investor: Where I am now and very much enjoy. Working with talented people to help them grow. And you can be here too, if you want. But not before you’ve been through the first 4 steps.

Interestingly when I look back at that journey stage two was more profitable than stage 3, but stage four was really profitable and I was able to remove myself from the day to day operations and achieve freedom.

My vision was always to build to sell and get my freedom that way. I’d seen other online education companies do this and knew I could make that happen which I achieved in 2019.

But it’s not the only way. You can continue to grow, buy companies to add to your business, and sell if you want. Or you can stay smaller, enjoy the role you’re in and do it that way.

I’ve done all of it and there are absolutely pro’s and con’s to all phases, you’ll feel like the grass is greener very often, but it’s important to remember it’s not.

My advice would be wherever you are in your journey understand what you’re doing and why, and what your end game is or could be.

And 100% get the help you need to make it a success. You can’t do it alone. And why would you want to?
