Business Breakdown #11: Why you should build an 'unscalable business'

In a world where we are bombarded with guru’s claiming to show us the light and the pathway to the scaleable, sellable asset, today’s business breakdown is a little different.
Today I want to talk about building an unscalable coaching business.
But first a quick update. We touched down in Sitges yesterday, what a beautiful town. I would highly recommend a visit if you get chance. I’ve no idea where we will go next, for now it’s running on the boardwalk, swimming with the kids, soaking up the culture, and maybe the odd Cigar! (Yes that is a guilty pleasure of mine! :)

Back to unscalable businesses.
There are two core ways to be free. And by free I mean have time and location freedom.
Build a business that works without you.
Build a business that relies upon you, but you can do it from anywhere and get really well paid for it.
Let’s look at the pro’s and con’s of each.
Building a business that works without you is what we’re taught.
If you get it right it’s amazing. You can really like the freedom life.
But it’s tough, trust me I know. It nearly broke me doing it and I was one of the fortunate ones to be able to realise value.
It’s not for everyone. You may not have the risk profile to invest in marketing, invest in staff, invest in making yourself redundant in order that you can live off the profits of the company. And even if you do have the risk appetite you might simply not want to do it, or the market might not be right for you to do it.
And if you make it work that’s awesome and you deserve your freedom. But the reality is 98% of business owners simply never get to this stage and therefore remain trapped in their business, paying their staff more than they earn and gradually growing more and more bitter.
You can see where i’m going here. Yes it’s absolutely possible. And if that’s your plan please continue. But with the best intentions it might not work. Even the very best have failures to their names.
Not cool.
Let’s look at the alternative.
Build an unscalable business that relies upon you.
This is never taught. In fact the opposite. It’s slandered. People actively teach to not do this.
But i’m a big fan of it, with some nuances.
Listen I admire anyone out there in the arena making things happen for themselves and their family.
But I offer you a better way.
And that way is monetise your existing skills and passions and build a business that you LOVE working in. That every day whilst challenging is rewarding.
And if you create compelling products, services and offers for your market you can sell for great money to people that value it.
Like coaching for example. You get to help amazing people get to live the life they want. You get paid, they win.
That’s called a win:win scenario! I wrote an entire article on the 4 business models of coaching you can read that here.
Doubling down on your skill development, your expertise in what you do, (experts get paid 14x more!), means you can love your work, love your clients and importantly charge what you’re worth and actually get paid. Doing it online means you can work from anywhere and have time and location freedom.
Now if you commit to becoming a performance coach, learning the skills required, as well as the business models I share above, you can offer solutions to people that you can sell for many thousands. My clients are selling anything from £1k to (genuinely) £50k packages.
But there’s a key skill set needed to position and sell at the upper levels. No one shows up with that cheque for you without following the process.

So which will you choose? Scalable or UnScalable?
