MINDSET : 

“When things calm down we’ll be able to get down to business”…

I’ll never forget this line one of my very first employees said to me.

We were in start up mode. Scaling from a few employees to over 20 in 12 months.

I remember thinking at the time “things will never calm down”. And why would we wasn’t them to?

10 years later yes I do value calm, but if you’re building something you’re proud of, if you’re delivering your very best work, if you’re serving people at an extremely high level, it’s not calm.

The objective is make progress through chaos, not eliminate chaos.

Get used to that way of working and over time you can actually find calm within chaos.

MONEY:

Marketing that sells is not what most people think of as marketing.

It’s not posting on social media or sending an occasional email.

THE best advice I’ve ever been given on marketing is this:

“Don’t be the advert be the show”.

I can’t remember who said it to me but it’s served me well for 15 years.

Everything is marketing. Even the thing you do for money is marketing for the next thing you do.

When you’re the show people want to watch. When you’re the advert people turn off.

In 2024 this could mean:

1. Running online conferences.

2. Starting a podcast.

3. Actually making amazing content that’s different.

4. Partnering with exciting people.

5. Running a festival or event.

6. Open Days.

7. Challenges.

8. Weekly webinars.

9. Masterclasses.

10. Competitions.

Your job is to create marketing that really excites your people. That’s actually valuable and enjoyable.

They win. Then you do.

FREEDOM:

I love this quote because it’s another one of those one liners that holds you ruthlessly to account.

Want more money - get on the phone and sell.

Want more freedom - pack your bags and leave.

Want to be leaner - get your running trainers out and move.

When we face up to ‘the thing’ that we’re avoiding we really do win.

Stop looking for the hack or the quick way.

The only shortcut is knowing there’s no shortcut.
